We must have all experienced that painting our fingernails is much easier than painting our toenails. But does that mean we have to visit the salon for perfectly painted toenails?
Ignoring your toenail and not painting it makes you feel like there is something missing. We avoid painting our toenail because it creates a mess and instead of making our leg beautiful we end up making it messy.
There is no need to worry or go to a salon for pedicures. I know salons can be expensive so I have come up with some basic step-wise guide for you to follow while painting your toenails.
A Complete Beginners Guide for Painting Toenails
How about beginning with the gathering of the requirements? So that you don’t have to run around looking for a top coat or cotton after applying nail polish. There are some basic requirements that you must collect to have a salon finished toenail. They are:
- Toes separator
- Nail polish remover
- Base Coat
- Colored Nail Polish
- Top Coat
- Thin stick
- Nail Cutter
After you are done with step 1, it’s time for the second important step. Well, you can do this step before step 1 but I personally prefer doing it after. So, check out for your toes nails. They might require some cleaning. Here is what you can do:
- If you still have your old nail polish then remove it using nail polish remover and cotton.
- Clip your nails. Long toenails do not look good and it might even hurt you if you hit your leg somewhere.
- File your nails to give the desired shape.
Now, coming to our main aim – that is painting our toenails.
After you are done with cleaning and clipping. It’s time to paint our toes.
Our toes stick close to each other so it becomes difficult to paint them without creating a mess. So, the solution to this problem is to use toe separators. They keep your toes away from each other making it easy to paint nails. You get these separators in the store or you can also use cotton balls.
You must have noticed that when you use a dark colored nail polish then removing them becomes very difficult. They leave dark colored stains.
In order to avoid that always use a base coat. The base coats protect our nails and also provides with a nice adhesive bed for the colored nail polish.
Now it’s time to apply colored nail polish to the toes. Use the color of your choice to paint your toes. Here are some tips that you must remember while applying the nail polish:
- Do not shake the bottle.
- Remove excessive paint from the brush.
- Apply thin coats.
- Apply additional coats only if needed.
- Start from the center bottom and drag it up. Then move to the sides.

After you are done painting remove the excess nail polish that must have stuck to the side skin of your toes. Dip the thin stick in some nail remover and use it to remove the excess polish.
Here comes the final step. Apply the top coat to your nails after you are done painting it. Topcoat keeps your nail paint seals and makes your nails shiny. Let your nails dry.
